Armed with a lifelong passion for learning how things work, Sean thrives on meeting innovators and inventors, evaluating new technology and implementing the best form of protection for clients. Sean’s extensive career of over 35 years includes 15 years as an engineer working with mechanical devices, electrical and control processes, instrumentation, hydrocarbon processes, and waste treatment.
This broad understanding of engineering technology is used to guide his clients through the patent process, and at times educating them on how to market and commercialize their creations. His clients have seen their patents become the basis for successful commercial ventures of their own or be purchased by large organizations that see the value in their product and strong protection.
Sean is a member of industry, intellectual property and legal associations including APEGA, SPE, IPIC, INTA, the Alberta Law Society and the Canadian Bar Association.

Linda M. Thompson

Linda is inspired by people who have the ability to recognize a problem, and then challenge themselves to work through the creative process to find a solution. Prior to joining Goodwin Patent & Trademark Law, she had the opportunity to work with many teams who were responsible for making clinical laboratory technology advancements ranging from manual, non-commercially available technologies, to the more complex and automated.
Linda’s ability to understand, retain, and translate complex information, ultimately satisfying patent requirements and clients alike, has resulted in the granting of numerous patents. Successful patent applications include those relating to new technologies, equipment and processes for a variety of industries but largely in the oil & gas industries. She is a member of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC) and the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS).
Linda’s education & qualifications include:
- Bachelors degree in Laboratory Technology
- Advanced Registered Technologist (ART) in Clinical Chemistry with over 20 years experience in a clinical laboratory setting.

Sue was drawn to science because she always loved learning how the natural world worked. After obtaining her Ph.D., Sue turned her sights on law, and patent law in particular, where she was able to leverage her scientific knowledge and apply it to support clients in patent-related matters.
With expertise in Pharmaceuticals, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Sue has drafted and/or prosecuted patents for many clients in the science and chemical arenas. She is also experienced in patent protection in oilfield and mechanical technologies in Canada, the USA and abroad. Sue also has extensive expertise in the Patented Medicines (NOC) Regulations, and has prepared numerous infringement, validity, and freedom-to-operate opinions for pharmaceutical and other clients.
Sue has been a registered Canadian and US Patent agent since 2003. She is a member of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC) and the Canadian Bar Association and the Alberta Law Society. She serves on committees for the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC), and has lectured at the University of Calgary.

Dr. Luke Wang, B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D. (Electrical Engineering), Patent Agent
Luke has many years of experience in research and development in Electrical Engineering. Educated in both Canada and China, his particular areas of expertise include wireless communications, signal processing, image processing, Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), and Software Engineering, including web technologies, databases, computer networks, and audio/video codecs.
Luke loves technology and he understands the technical detail and sophisticated language that is required to successfully secure a patent. Engineers and developers appreciate this advanced technical knowledge base and not having to over-simplify their work.
